As a serial event volunteer, here is my confession. I first started volunteering when I was studying at college, to get some work experience under my belt, and I really enjoyed it on the whole, so I ‘got the bug’. I am lucky enough to live in a big city with a lot of events happening and plenty of opportunities to get involved. 

This trend can no longer be ignored as employees born between 1977 and 1995 now represent the largest demographic in the workforce. It is now essential to adjust both event marketing and programming to address the needs of shifting demographics and for engaging younger participants in your content and events.

Attracting and engaging with event attendees from the demographic cohort ‘Generation Y’, is one of the most sought-after targets in our fast-changing industry. In their effort to attract more millennials and motivate them to interact, event professionals strive towards creating events that act as elevated educational platforms, enhanced with digital tools, while embracing the power of social media.

Did you know that millennials make up a whopping one third of the U.S. population? This group, falling between the ages of 18-34, make up a huge percentage of your attendee base. But they’re a powerful audience for your events for another reason: 75% of millennials say they value experiences over things.

Interviews can be your one chance to sell yourself effectively to a new boss and it is vital that you are well prepared and ready to impress. Millennials is a strange word people use – often with some derision – to refer to a younger generation of workers. Many falsely believe they’re different from other generations, and that something might be wrong with them. What’s probably driving much of this sense of enigma is that Millennials are less engaged at work than older generations. Much ink has been spilled on the topic of engaging Millennials more.

If you’re looking to hire talent for your next event, you have options. While you technically could place an ad in the classifieds of your local paper, or reach out to your network, at some point you will likely end up searching on the internet.

During the workshop we delivered in Paris earlier this month on millennials as colleagues and members, we realised for some people it is not yet about ‘how best to deal with younger colleagues in the workplace’ but more about ‘why should we care’. We had skipped a step in our thinking. Because we know so many millennial colleagues - so many talented, value-adding, clever millennial colleagues - we had forgotten that some of our participants might not know ‘who the true millennial’ is and why they even matter.

Do you want to innovate and grow as an event professional? Do you want to plan better events? If so, it’s time to get uncomfortable. The magic begins where your comfort zone ends. Growth never occurs within your comfort zone. Have you seen these quotes making their way on the internet as inspirational image memes? While it’s easy to write them off as new-age, feel-good sentiment, there’s a lot to be said for them.

It’s a common refrain from younger professionals, “I’m good at my job, so why can’t I get promoted?" You may want to be promoted after a few months of work. Are you capable of doing some or most of the work that bigger job will require? Maybe you are. But I believe that time has value in and of itself.

Following the first part of the ‘new’ event professionals, it is time to explore the remaining roles that have already had a great impact on the event industry. In the digital world that we live in, it is noticeable that the roles and responsibilities in event design and management increase and expand their functionalities further. Similarly to the new types of events and new ways of engaging with your audiences, the event industry’s workforce has been growing significantly with the creation/addition of new roles that complement the work of ‘traditional’ event professionals.
